Organization Effectiveness and Structure

Question: Talk about the Organization Effectiveness and Structure. Answer: Outline of the Organization Bubbly Feet (FF) initially began as an association yet now an open constrained organization is a shoe producing organization that spends significant time in athletic footwear for the two people. It has been working since the previous fifteen years; however has ascended into unmistakable quality throughout the previous not many years as it were. Clients respect its top notch administration and sensible estimating the go-to-motivations to purchase FFs shoes. Ladies, particularly, rave about how agreeable and dependable FFs footwear is in spite of being evaluated significantly lower than what its rivals bring to the table. FF as of now has two working production lines in rural urban areas and different other elite retail outlets that sell just FFs shoes. The organization has opened selective show rooms with a notice trademark of Best shoe for best foot. In particular, verbal exposure has what has made the organization ascend on its prevalence status-because of the stunning quality shoes. With everything taken into account, FF is an all around presumed and progressively well known athletic footwear organization that, whenever shaped the correct way, has the ability to lead the footwear showcase. Hierarchical Structure and its Life Cycle An authoritative structure(Baligh, 2006) is the interior system of a business; it shows the manner by which the board and other dynamic exercises are completed in an association. It shows how authority is passed down in an association. Fundamentally, it speaks to who has by and large obligation of the association. FF, an athletic footwear organization, goes through framework association structure(Knight, 1977). The lattice structure is a hierarchical structure that runs by making venture teams(Mary Beth Pinto, 1990) that cut across customary utilitarian divisions. In more straightforward words, FF has made different has constructed equipped task groups over its two assembling destinations that viably work to create footwear. It is the equivalent with the innovative work group. There are around five venture groups that surface with new showcasing and creation strategies. The board talks about on the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and finishes on the valuable ones. This strategy for getting sorted out is venture centered. Group approaches together and the feeling of being together is built up. FF has most likely been affected by the generally acclaimed book In Search of Excellence(Peters, 1982). Concerning life cycle, the organization is still in its development stage. It intends to develop as far as item and market enhancement and its deals as well. The companys center around groups and imagination is a marker of how the organization is advancing inventiveness for item and market broadening. While one should take note of that the organization vigorously advances grid structure underway and imaginative procedures, the top managerial staff takes ultimate choice. Henceforth, while the vast majority of the authority is assigned, the board despite everything has the last say on every single issue. Along these lines, practically based structure(Boundless, 2016) is predominant. Job of innovation in the companys association structure The companys working structure is intensely affected by innovation and endeavor asset planning(Makers, 2011) is a significant piece of that overwhelming impact. Undertaking Resource Planning (ERP) is the utilization of a solitary PC application to direct and design the buy and utilization of assets in an association. FF especially utilizes this application to arrange and hold data about its everyday buy exercises. The hierarchical structure spins around this PC application as the job of different individuals from the organization and their motivations, including something as fundamental as a gracefully chain, is engraved in the PC application. For a huge and confounded system as of FFs, innovation has and will assume an unmistakable job in its ordinary exercises. Present day creation frameworks use PC based innovation for incorporating different parts of assembling process in a superior and extemporized way and furthermore permit fast and cost effective adjustments of any product(Ahmed). It has improved the way toward overseeing reports and empowered correspondence for all intents and purposes in formal structures all through its correspondence organize. The utilization of cutting edge gadgets has expanded proficiency and profitability for the organization. The utilization of cutting edge creation plants a type of innovation, for examplehas emphatically influenced the creation procedures of the organization FF. Possibility dynamic and Effectiveness of the structure and the cycle The lattice structure has permitted complete correspondence between all individuals from the group and building an affectionate tight relationship among the individuals. In like manner this structure additionally underpins in possibility dynamic. This has in many cases been a type of inspiration to improve among laborers. Theyve felt free and unfathomable with regards to their imaginative potential as theyve been offered opportunities to investigate their thoughts. A feeling of teamworka type of motivation(Mayo), (Vroom, 1964) has been made and FF has been an observer to the positive changes. The adaptability that the framework structure offers permits and offices possibility dynamic and arranging. There is a great deal of natural vulnerabilities encompassing an organization, and a viable hierarchical structure bolsters the organization during such vulnerabilities, along these lines, framework structure is a decent structure to build the over all adequacy of the organization. Moreover, the jobs inside the organization have become substantially more clear and undertaking groups have an away from of what theyre expected to do and what they should mean to accomplish development. The hybrid of thoughts with between individuals of pro information in various fields has made a significantly more gainful condition in FFs different divisions. For instance, while talking about on what structures to dispatch so as to draw in the market proviso mature age bunches in athletic footwear- - the groups came u with discerning and educated ends on different market viewpoints. Be that as it may, venture groups have adversely rivaled one another, frequently bringing about awful vibes in the organization itself. One anticipate group beating the others has created desire and a feeling of shamefulness. Additionally, since there is less immediate control from the top, going down power to junior specialists has been hard to certain chiefs. Theyve whined that a few administrators have put some distance between the work procedures of some task bunches because of self-rule that venture bunches broadly work out. Additionally, a few reports of conflicts between individuals from a similar group have likewise gone over. Obviously, a few individuals are troubled in working in groups that purportedly dont esteem their musings and simply go with what the lion's share says. End and Recommendations FF is one of those couple of organizations that has an all around assembled structure, realizes what it needs to accomplish and includes an arrangement inside its association and its structure to accomplish it. While FF has just made considerable progress, it despite everything has a daunting struggle to battle on the off chance that it would like to come in the positions of Adidas and Nike in athletic footwear. For that, the organization should roll out useful improvements in its organizationmaybe gather input and proposals structure its workers on the present authoritative culture. It should take a shot at tending to the minorities of the task groups, as there have been objections with respect to how the minorities have felt dismissed. The grid structure is totally fine with regards to actuating inventiveness and exploration. Henceforth, I enthusiastically suggest that FF keep utilizing it. Be that as it may, it would be better if FF sets up standard procedures and benchmarks so as to gauge how gainful one anticipate group is in order to urge solid rivalry and to tell groups their speculative commitment to the new-ness of the organization. Venture groups are alright for alternate courses of action too as FF consistently has a back up plan if the best arrangement doesnt finish and that a Plan B is consistently present. In any case, Id suggest that the chain of importance is ignored and that the supervisor is given control of any mishaps/crises that may happen in the association. For example, the division must not need to hang tight for the endorsement of the board to purchase a tremendous plant, when the other one quit working, to proceed with creation forms. For possibilities, the organization must have another go-to hierarchical structure, for instance the possibility hypothesis of organizations(Donaldson, 2001), with the goal that creation forms (or some other significant procedures) is unhampered. Eveline has lived in Dublin her whole life in Dublin and has seen her siblings either leave home or pass away through time. In Lincoln In The Bardo, George Saunders Examines Abraham

In Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders examines Abraham Lincoln’s paternal grief over the course of a single day, beginning with the loss of his third son, William Wallace Lincoln, affectionately known as â€Å"Willie†. The novel is a work of historical fiction, however, it goes beyond the label by combining the citation of primary and secondary historical accounts with the creation of a fantastical afterlife filled with nontraditional â€Å"ghosts† to form the central narration of the story. Unlike most Lincoln fiction and nonfiction, there is only a negligible focus on the Civil War, and the time period is indicated more so by the speech patterns of the multiple narrators and minor environmental details, such as the mention of telegraphs. Often†¦show more content†¦The purpose of Lincoln in the Bardo appears to be Saunders’ attempting to tackle complex questions about love, life, and death by placing it in a famous context close to the heart o f America. In using Abraham Lincoln, one of the United States’ most beloved and well-known leaders, Saunders is able to elevate the common theme of familial loss to tell a story that’s paradoxically both intensely personal and exceptional, but also accessible to a majority of people. The novel is brimming with human truths, putting words to emotional hardships shared by all. The loss of Willie, a boy mentioned to be â€Å"†¦more quiet than that of the unpredictable Tad; he was amiable, cheerful, mature for his age, and the one who was most popular with his playmates,† shook the entire Lincoln family, even though he wasn’t the first, Edward Baker Lincoln only lived to be three years old, and his passing is described to have, â€Å"†¦left a scar in the hearts of the parents which undoubtedly contributed toward their complete indulgence of the other children† (Randall 7). It’s Lincoln deep love for his son that allows him to enter th e titular â€Å"bardo†, a translation of a Tibetan word with origin in Buddhist tradition. In the story, the bardo acts as a sort of purgatory where the dead roam. Lincoln’s presence in this metaphysical in-between isn’t special however, it’s his interactions with the ghost of his son. In an early scene, Lincoln visits the crypt where Willie body is being kept and holds him.

Question: Discuss About The Interpreting Accounting Information Decision? Answer: Introduction The main purpose of the report is to analyze the deferred tax assets and liabilities. The report will be analyzing the financial statements of both the companies which are Blackmores ltd and Bega Cheese ltd. The report will be analyzing whether both the companies have any deferred tax assets and deferred tax liabilities and whether such are properly disclosed in the financial reports of 2017 (Laux, 2013). The report will be concluding how omission of Items of deferred tax assets and deferred tax liabilities will impact decision making process of stakeholders and such will be impacting the investing decisions of the stakeholders. Overview of the Companies Blackmores is an Australian company which is engaged in health supplements which was founded in 1930. The company first opened its first health shop in Brisbane in Australia. The company was founded by Maurice Blackmore and its headquarter is situated in Sydney, Australia. The company has a market specialization of $2 billion as per recent estimates (Company information., 2018). Bega Cheese is an Australian Based Dairy company which is engaged in the manufacture of dairy products. The company was founded in 1899 and its headquarter is situated in Bega, New South Wales, Australia (Accc.gov.au., 2018). Objectives for Accounting for Income Tax Income tax is shown in the consolidated balance sheet of the company and also in income statement of the company. The current income tax paid is shown in the income statement and the same is also recorded in the cash flow statement. However in certain situations the figures which are shown in the profit and loss account differs from the actual cash flow as shown in cash flow statements (Harrington, Smith Trippeer, 2012). The reasons for such can be the presences of deferred tax assets and liabilities which can be set off or set on. The consolidated profit and loss statement of Blackmores ltd shows that the company has an income tax expenses of $24023000 in 2017 which has significantly decreased from the previous year which was $43391000 in 2016. The notes to account of the company shows that the company has a deferred tax benefit $3092000 and also adjustments which are recognized in the current year is $844000. On the other hand the income tax expenses as shown in the annual reports for Bega Cheese ltd for 2016 is shown at $59290000 which is more than what was the figure in last year that is $11121000. The deferred tax liability which is shown in the notes to accounts is shown at $5496000 and in previous year the deferred tax benefit was $ 847000. The objectives of the accounting for income tax are given below: Accounting for income tax is mainly done as for recognizing the amount of tax payable or which is to be refunded for the current year. The tax payable by the company is calculated on the basis of the net income which the company earns during the financial year (Armstrong, Blouin Larcker, 2012). The process of accounting enables the companies to maintain a record of how much the company is paying taxes currently and what amount was paid by the company in previous year. Thus it can be said in a nutshell that accounting of tax information of a company will be making the financial statements more presentable from the view point of the taxation principles. Such presentation can also depict tax refunds which the company will be receiving for the excess tax paid by the company. Moreover accounting for income tax aims to recognize the deferred tax liabilities and assets which may be due to differentiation in procedures of depreciation in both accounts and tax. The deferred tax assets and liabilities for the company shows future tax consequences which is needed to be recognized in the financial statements (Graham, Raedy Shackelford, 2012). The income tax assets or deferred incomes taxes are recognized and presented in the balance sheet in the noncurrent assets and noncurrent liabilities respectively. However as per the new guidance on deferred tax assets and liabilities there will be only one net figure of either deferred tax assets or deferred tax liability (Stice Stice, 2013). Another objective of recording deferred tax liabilities and deferred asset is that in recent times the companies have started using these as source of manipulations in business, if proper accounts are maintained then such risks of manipulations are more or less mitigated. Deferred Tax Assets and Liabilities The identification of deferred tax assets and liabilities are done as per the requirements of AASB 112 or IAS 12. The AASB 112 is an Australian standard which states the about the income tax disclosure. Similarly the IAS 12 states the requirement of income tax provisions as per International Standards (De George, Ferguson Spear, 2012). As per the standard, Deferred tax assets refers to the income tax which can be recovered in a future period which can be due to a variety of reasons like differences, carry forward of losses which are unused from previous periods and also the carry forwards of unused tax credits. Whereas deferred tax liability refers to the tax which can be played in the previous year in respect of taxable temporary differences (AASB, C. A. S., 2014). Whereas deferred tax assets is identified for all deductible difference to the point that it is probable that the taxable profit will be available against which temporary difference can be utilized unless such assets ari ses (Hanlon, Navissi Soepriyanto, 2014). From initial recognition of an assets or liability which is not a business combination and at the time of transaction affects neither accounting or taxable profits. As per section 34 of AASB 112 states that the deferred tax assets shall be recognized for the carry forward of unused tax losses and tax credits which can be set off with the probable future taxable profits. The fact is inherent in the recognition of the liability that the carrying amount will be settled in a future period. The liability which is recognized in the financial statement is on the basis of resource flow which can arise due to temporary differences. In this situation the difference exists in the tax rate and the carrying amount of the liability. The assets such as deferred tax will be made when income taxes that was supposed to be recovered in the future periods and the liability of such a tax is paid off in the present. In the same way, when the carrying amount of an asset as compared to its tax base is lower than such a gap gives rise to a deferred tax asset. Analysis of financial Statement The income tax which is recognized in the annual reports of the Blackmores ltd for the year 2017 shows a figure of $24023000 which includes current year tax expenses in respect for the current year and also contains adjustments which are to be made in respect of current taxes of pervious years. The net figure which is shown in the profit and loss account is also adjusted of figures of deferred tax benefits relating to the business and also certain temporary reversals. The income tax figure as shown in the statement of profit and loss for 2017 of Bega Cheese is $59380000 which is much more than previous year figures. The income tax figure consists of current tax charges and also includes deferred tax liability which is shown at $ 5496000 and adjustments which are of previous years. Many assets of the company where the Blackmores ltd has recognized like property, plants and equipment, accurals and foreign currency and as well as other items of the business. As per the balance sheet However in the comprehensive income of Blackmores ltd shows no income tax income in other comprehensive income. The balance sheet of Bega Cheese show that income tax is included in the fair value of the investments and also in the movement in the hedging reserve which is shown in the notes of accounts of the company. The company has income tax figure of $45000 in 2017 of fair value movement in investments and movement in hedging reserve shows a figure of $ 161000 which is negative. The current tax expenses of the Blackmores ltd as shown in the balance sheet of the company is shown at $27239000 and the deferred tax of the company is shown at $3092000. The net figure which is shown in the profit and loss account is also adjusted of figures of deferred tax benefits relating to the business and also certain temporary reversals. On the other hand Bega Cheese ltd shows deferred tax liability in the notes to accounts is shown at $5496000 and in previous year the deferred tax benefit was $847000. The current tax expense is $65152000 of the company which is more than the previous year figures. In both the annual reports of the both the companies that is Blackmores ltd and Bega Cheese ltd show both current and deferred tax expenses in the balance sheet of the company. The significance of the current tax expenses and deferred tax items in the Blackmores is more than that of Bega Cheese of the company. Impact of Decision Making of Stakeholders Nowadays the figure of deferred tax is gaining importance more and more these days as the business may try to manipulate such entries so that the business can gain advantage in business. The investor and the stakeholders decisions can be altered as changes or omission of the deferred tax amounts can significantly impact business valuations (Trugman, 2016). Moreover companies utilizes such deferred tax items using the tax rates which are prevalent in the current year. If there are significant changes in the tax rates than that will consequently change all the values of the financial report of the company. If corporate rates of the company change then so will the deferred tax assets and liabilities. In addition to this the deferred tax assets and liabilities have direct impacts on the cash flow of the company and so the stakeholders decisions may also be impacted by such a reason (Collier, 2015). Any rational investor or lender who is reviewing a financial report of the company would w ant to know more about the deferred tax expenses if such appear in the annual reports. The investors would be keen to know the break ups and what consists of the deferred tax assets and liabilities. The investor or the lender will also like to know what are the situations which caused the deferred tax assets and liabilities of the company in the first place. Thus from the above discussion it is clear that the investor will be definitely considering the deferred tax assets and liabilities while taking a decisions (Wahab Holland, 2012). Conclusions Thus from the above discussions it is clear that the decision making of the investors will be affected by the deferred tax assets and liabilities. The above discussions also stresses and evaluates the tax treatments of Blackmores ltd and Bega Cheese ltd. The above discussions also shows the breakup of deferred tax assets and liabilities which includes current taxes, adjustments. Reference Company information. (2018).Blackmores.com.au. Forbidden Fruit Review Essay Example

Forbidden Fruit Review Paper Essay on Forbidden Fruit I have such a category of book manga. You read it and like nothing special and no, and style simple and predictable plot, but it is still impossible to break away. Thats Forbidden Fruit Lauren Hamilton just out of this category. The scene grim at first sight, a world where roam zombie, vampirism is officially recognized and legalized, and the people, freely turning into a rat, it is quite normal . If you think about it, I can not imagine how you can live a normal life in a nightmare? But the main character, Anita Blake, a girl with high moral principles, if not strange, it was not possible to go crazy in this crazy world. Though I must admit that the work she is not quite normal, perhaps even quite unusual. She picks up the graves of the dead and sends the vampire world. And its expert on evil, intercessor of the forces of evil, light and laid back blackmail hired to investigate the mysterious murders of the most loathsome, in her opinion, the creation of vampires. And start a dynamic investigation of the bloody fights, romantic, sex scenes, and more new murders, during which Anita had time to visit, and the cemetery, and the circus, and in a strip club, and BDSM party, and in the church. At the same time it tried to hypnotize, to tear, to rape and shoot, but she bravely endured all the trials. The book is so full of events that just can not believe its been only a few days. A sort of Lara Croft, killing vampires. Strong and confident girl who even sleeps with a gun under his pillow. At the same time, Anita, like any normal person has their weakness and may also be afraid of, but life obliges her to endure difficulties. She jokes to keep from crying. On it wants to be like, to be strong and independent, with all the external fragility. Of course, the plot of the book falls short of the ideal. Guess who the real killer may be much earlier than the main character. The book does not encourage to any thoughts, it only helps to pass the time pleasantly. It is designed for a narrow audience, children under 16 is contraindicated for adults offering experienced will be boring and meaningless. This book version of the modern action movie, and wonder how it has not yet been filmed.

The Friendship Story of Damon and Pythias

The Friendship Story of Damon and Pythias Turn of  the 20th-century storyteller James Baldwin included the story of Damon and Pythias (Phintias) in his collection of 50 famous stories children should know [See Learning Lessons From the Past]. These days, the story is more likely to appear in a collection showing the contributions of ancient gay men or on the stage, and not so much in childrens storybooks. The story of Damon and Pythias shows true friendship and self-sacrifice, as well as concern for family, even in the face of death. Perhaps its time to try to revive it. Damon and Pythias endured either the father or the same despotic ruler as Damocles of the sword hanging on a slender thread-fame, which is also in Baldwins collection. This tyrant was Dionysius I of Syracuse, an important city in Sicily, which was part of the Greek area of Italy (Magna Graecia). As is true of the story of the Sword of Damocles, we can look to Cicero for an ancient version. Cicero describes the friendship between Damon and Pythias in his De Officiis III. Dionysius was a cruel ruler, easy to run afoul of. Either Pythias or Damon, young philosophers in the school of Pythagoras (the man who gave his name to a theorem used in geometry), ran into trouble with the tyrant and wound up in prison. This was in the 5th century. Two centuries earlier there had been a Greek named Draco, an important law-giver in Athens, who had prescribed death as the penalty for theft. When asked about his seemingly extreme punishments for relatively minor crimes, Draco said he regretted there was no punishment more serious for more heinous crimes. Dionysius must have agreed with Draco since execution appears to have been the intended fate of the philosopher. It is, of course, remotely possible that the philosopher had engaged in a serious crime, but it hasnt been reported, and the reputation of the tyrant is such that it is easy to believe the worst. Before the one young philosopher was scheduled to lose his life, he wanted to put his familys affairs in order  and asked leave to do so. Dionysius assumed he would run away and initially said no, but then the other young philosopher said he would take his friends place in the prison, and, should the condemned man not return, he would forfeit his own life. Dionysius agreed  and was then greatly surprised when the condemned man returned in time to face his own execution. Cicero doesnt indicate that Dionysius released the two men, but he was duly impressed with the friendship exhibited between the two men and wished he could join them as a third friend. Valerius Maximus, in the 1st century A.D. does say that Dionysius released them and kept them near him ever after. [See Valerius Maximus: The History of Damon and Pythias, from De Amicitiae Vinculo or read the Latin 4.7.ext.1.] Below you may read the story of Damon and Pythias in the Latin of Cicero, followed by an English translation that is in the public domain. Qui cum ad diem se recepisset, admiratus eorum fidem tyrannus petivit, ut se ad amicitiam tertium adscriberent.[45] But I am speaking here of ordinary friendships; for among men who are ideally wise and perfect such situations cannot arise. They say that Damon and Phintias, of the Pythagorean school, enjoyed such ideally perfect friendship, that when the tyrant Dionysius had appointed a day for the execution of one of them, and the one who had been condemned to death requested a few days respite for the purpose of putting his loved ones in the care of friends, the other became surety for his appearance, with the understanding that if his friend did not return, he himself should be put to death. And when the friend returned on the day appointed, the tyrant in admiration for their faithfulness begged that they would enrol him as a third partner in their friendship.M. Tullius Cicero. CORPORATE FINANCE - ASSIGNMENT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

CORPORATE FINANCE - ASSIGNMENT - Essay Example mpany is evident and the company has declared a relatively high dividend of 57p per share in the year 2008 which is a significant improvement as far as last 3 year dividends declared are concerned. All in all, our mathematical method of computing WACC suggests that GSK is highly inclined towards debt financing, which is a prime reason behind the increment in WACC. We also conclude the fact that floating interest rate due to the current economic condition reduces the WACC and also consider the company’s performance which reflects on the net income which ultimately reflects on the dividends declared. It is prime evidence of the fact that the management takes all necessary measures to reduce the cost of doing business which is a major consideration for any and every business. The operating, investing and financing activities of a company are very handy and useful information for the users of financial infrmation, such as creditors, investors, financial analysts, etc, because these activities change the financial position of the company. Let us now look upon some of the important activities that make some impression on GSK’s financial position. GSK’s management has adopted sound business strategies in order to ensure smooth and efficient running of its operational activities. These strategies have expanded the cash generation from operations to  £ 9,055m in the year 2008 in comparison to previous years. The reason behind this high figure of  £9,055 million are the two reclassifications; the cash generated from operations is  £106 million lower than that given in GSK’s unaudited or projected accounts issued on 5th February 2009. Also keeping in view that drop-off in liquid investments for the current year has been reclassified from financing activities to investing activities. Some accounting heads that create changes in the trade payables may have been a result of the growth of products that the company introduced. GSK management computes inventories on a

Religion, Spirituality and Supreme Being Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Religion, Spirituality and Supreme Being - Essay Example Suffice it is to say that Chinese believe in a Supreme Being, the greatest and the only force that takes care of the functioning and evolution of the Cosmos. Turn the pages of Chinese history; one sees the interplay of different religions and their lasting impact on the Chinese psyche, under one spiritual umbrella. A truly spiritual man reposes faith on a tree, a mountain, a river or any facet of nature. Viewed from this angle the Chinese are spiritual. Religion comes next. Religion though basically faith-related, is to comply with a set of rules and regulations and rituals that have evolved as customs and traditions over a long period. So much so, that the individual loses sight of the intrinsic spiritual worth of that custom and follows them blindly. When one is member of a single organization and views all other faiths/organization with suspicion to start with, and contempt to follow, one develops fanaticism. A man without an abiding faith is not a truly religious individual. With out such an affirmation one will not be able to confine to ethical levels, which sustain the healthy growth of the society. Without faith, downward spiral of the society commences that will ultimately lead to uncontrollable social ills. Western vs. Chinese Religions To the Chinese, religion is not mere the view of life, but the way of life. Confucianism has been the eternal bridge that connects the peoples of a vast country like China. One may hail it as a philosophy and/or a religion. According to Confucianism heaven is the ultimate authority. That transcendental power engulfs everything, physical, secular, spiritual, nature and destiny. Shao Yong, Confucian scholar of the eleventh century CE, argues, â€Å"Error in human knowledge is due to the fact that we observe things from our own experience†¦.we must view things, not with our physical eyes, but with our mind, and not even with our mind, but with the principle inherent in things. When the boundary between subject and obj ect disappears, we will be able to see things as they are.†( xi, xii) Some of the western books on philosophy and religion are kindergarten stuffs as compared to the profundity of the Chinese spiritual lore. It is not necessary that the entire populace of the country needs to practice one faith; what is important is what type of people that faith molds! Religion and faith make it easier for the human being to reach the level of spirituality. Religions of China lay more importance on the inner development of an individual. Each individual contributes to the health of the Nation, just like each brick contributes to the strength of a magnificent mansion! Did religion exist in China prior to engagement with the West? This question is rather an affront to the people of China. China is the homeland of some of the greatest philosophies and religions in the world like, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Folk Religion. Even when Religion is associated with faith in a Supreme Being and membership in a single organization variable belief systems exist within that faith. Some intellectuals argue that Chinese people are not very religious. But the ground reality is, religious culture has, at all times, a profound effect in molding the psyche of the Chinese people. Not China, but the West has learned many finer aspects of religion and spirituality with interaction with the Chinese scholars and people. Shao Yong argues, â€Å"Christian missionaries and those influenced by Christian images of the eastern tradition have continuously played an important

Big Industries Essay Example for Free

Big Industries Essay Many things that happened in history had a major impact on the world, especially when the development of big industries came about. Such things as Go-Getters, people credited for bringing the country together, and railroads, which interconnected things, all helped begin the Industrial Revolution. It was started mainly in Western Europe- England. One of the greatest things established was the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, which made it easier to travel ocean to ocean from a month, to a week. The only problem was that there was no way to tell the exact time of departure and arrival. People counted on the sun, which was not most accurate. After a while, people relied on Philadelphia time, which still had its defaults. Shortly after, men were sent to go fix the problem, and in 1883, at noon, everyone set to Standard Time, (One of 4 time zones. ) This made it easier for people who used the train as transportation, to know the exact times of departure and arrival. Another development involved in railroad transportation was the invention of, Standard Gauge, created by George Stevenson. This was a gauge set at 4 feet, 8. 5 inches, that showed how far apart rails had to be from each other. By 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in standard gauge. The South changed over to it as well in 1886, and the entire nation used it. Later on, a Go-Getter named Rockefellar, made his fortune through oil. He organized companies into pools, where all prices were the same, and there was no competition. He made it so that there was no conspiracy, which was anything that involved different prices. He built a company, known as the Trustee, which controlled all the businesses. The first trust, was called Standard Oil. Two other Go-Getters were Morgan and Carnegie. Morgan was a rich organizer who bought all bankrupted companies, and Carnegie was poor, but made money in grain trading. Shortly after, he moved into the steel industry. In 1900, he made 25 million dollars in the steel business. Morgan offered to buy his steel business for 420-480 billion dollars, and soon after, he produced 60% of the countries steel. When rock oil came along, it changed the world. A man named Bissell opened a rock oil company in Western Pennsylvania. This company was used for medicinal purposes; it was not a moneymaker. He gave a Yale professor named Ben Sillimah, 500 dollars to figure out what to do with it. He figured out that if the oil was distilled, it could operate better than kerosene used as a lubricant. Their problem was getting oil, because it could only be found in lakes, so Bissell sent Edwin Drake to find another way to drill for oil. He stopped in Titusville, and found a man named Uncle Billy Smith to drill for him. It took him 3 months to get 70 feet below the surface. One day, he found oil, and it began the oil rush. Pennsylvania became an oil field. Rockefellar started his business in Cleveland, Ohio. He bought his first oil refinery in 1865. He went to a railroad company and said that he needed to transport barrels of oil, and if they did not help him with the expensive price to do so, he would go to another company to help him, and make them bankrupt. They agreed, and gave him a rebate. After that, he went to a little company and told them to sell their company to him, but they gave him practically nothing. Soon after, he built his own pipeline, where he manufactured oil lamps, and sold it to the Chinese. The oil industry grew and exploded when automobiles were invented. Between the years of 1860 and 1910, 23 million people immigrated from Europe. In 1860, the government passed a law, making a 10-hour workday for every worker, but no one went around enforcing it. People usually worked 12 hours. In 1868, an 8-hour workday law was passed, but it only applied to government work. Usually people got paid in piecework, which was that they would get paid for the amount of products they made. This was favorable for young people. Later on, a man named Fredrick Taylor developed Efficiency Work. In 1881, he examined the factories and everyones job, and put they into tasks. He put a time on each part of the task, which meant that they could not do as they pleased and everything was a on a time scale. There was also a product/craftsmen relationship. Workers were seen as machines. They worked in a strict environment. There was much noise, poor ventilation, and poor lighting. In 1882, there were up to 675 people killed a week. Woman also worked, but had poorer jobs, and poorer pay. They had simple task jobs, such as sewing. There was no room for advancement. In 1890, the U. S. conducted a census. 9% of the population owned 75% of the wealth. This caused resentment against workers. Cooperation instead of competition began in Europe in 1830. Karl Marx wrote a communist manifesto. Most people turned to trade unions. In 1837, a panic came about, and it was a year of depression. After the Civil War, unions came about more. They provided for members during hard times. In the 1860s and 1870s unions began to nationalize. In 1869, the Knights of Labor erupted. It organized many different groups, such as farmers, factory workers, office workers- skilled and unskilled, and African Americans. Many members believed in strikes, and won the strike against a railroad company, which boosted membership to over 700,000. It controlled money, votes, and fields of work. This was called the American Federation of Labor. A man named Samuel Gompers took people of one skill, and broke them down into specific areas. In 1892, he gained 250,000 members, but women and Africans were excluded. They felt that women took away bargaining power from the union. Employees working in a factory believed in collective bargaining, which instead of one person doing the same thing at a time to negotiate demands, one did everything for all. They tried to get closed shops, which was a place where you had to join the union to work there. Employers believed in forbidding meetings, and firing union organizers. They made workers promise to not join the unions, and refused to recognize union representatives. They thought that workers most powerful tool was a strike, which was a risk to ones entire life. In 1877, B O Railroad spread across the entire country, and demanded better working conditions and better pay. In 1892, the Homestead Strike was developed in Homestead, Pennsylvania. The Pinkertons were called upon to break up union strikes. The last of the great strikes was Pullmans Strike. Pullman was a train/car maker, who built for his workers. In 1894, he laid-off and cut wages, which made people very angry. His workers went to protest, so he fired 3 out of 5 of them. The strike spread throughout the country, so employers turned to the government and President Grover Cleveland for help. All laborers had to go back to work by the force of troops that had been sent. This started a trend so that whenever workers went on strike, owners could go to the federal government for help. A man named Thomas Edison, who started out in a city to improve technology for the stock ticker, received a bonus of 40,000 dollars, and left to open a business in New Jersey. He invented many things, but his favorite of them all was the Phonograph. He invented the light bulb with the help of Lewis Latimer, and hooked up New York City buildings to a power plant. By 1890, power plants were everywhere. He came up with a direct current, that went only 1 mile, but a man named Westinghouse had made a current that was alternating, and was a transformer. By 1898, there were 3,000 power stations powering over 2 million light bulbs. The affects that it had on daily lives were the birth of appliances, such as the refrigerator, and jobs were created. The development of the Industrial Revolution changed many things, and helped a good portion of them. Americans lives were made easier, and the good that it brought out is still used today. Great accomplishments will continue to occur, and make history such as the big explosion of the development of big industries.

In Defense of Liberty and Individuality Essay -- Essays Papers

In Defense of Liberty and Individuality It is a little-known fact that for the past century, every American president has been given a copy of John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty[1] upon entering office. Since its publication in 1859, On Liberty’s discussions of liberty and individuality have been a foundation for modern Western political thought and for the liberal democracy. Mill brings to light a unique perspective on the relationship between liberty and individuality, and in the end, on tolerance. According to Mill, individual liberty should be limited by one, and only one thing: the self-preservation of society and other individuals. To that end, man should be free to act and even more so to think in any form he wishes, without the suppression of ideas or opinions, as long as it does not prevent others from doing the same. This liberty will diversify society and allow individuality to flourish. For Mill, liberty—based on a recognition of man’s fallibility and right to self-preservation —breeds individuality, which in turn leads to the betterment of individual character and of society as a whole. Mill begins On Liberty by stating his goal explicitly: a discussion of civil or social liberty and more specifically, what power society or government can legitimately wield over the people—â€Å"the struggle between Liberty and Authority† (On Liberty, 3). As will be shown in more detail later, Mill seems to find himself, and the developed world, in a period of transition. He notes that historical liberty was based on seeking protection against the political tyranny of leaders who did not rule by the will of the people or for the good of the people. Reformers, unsatisfied with the state of affairs, tried to limit the r... ...nt of recognizing all sides of the truth, are principles applicable to men’s modes of action, not less than their opinions† (On Liberty, 58). He argues that liberty and individuality are not only related, but are inseparable. He grounds his reasoning in the utilitarian view that because man is not perfect, no opinion or life should be taken as correct or incorrect unless given a chance to be tested, and that society and individuals can only progress if these tests are allowed. Mill remarks that society is currently being dominated by an emerging conformity and mediocrity. He sees individuality as the only hope to curb this dangerous progression, and liberty as individuality’s creator and protector. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Mill, John Stuart. Cosi – Louis Nowra

Cosi by Louis Nowra conveys significant ideas about human nature. Through the play Cosi, the audience witnesses the lives of mentally ill people unfold before them. Central characters Lewis, Doug and Julie each show and express a different view upon the world and work towards their own idea of reality. They each express their individual ideas of the norm and work together to escape reality. Many themes such as love and infidelity as well as change are conveyed throughout the play. Cosi is a comic play written by Australian playwright, Louis Nowra. An interesting feature of the play is the use of the ‘play within a play' device, which gives the play a distinctive quality. This allows the issues and concerns of the play to be reflected and commented upon in he other play as both plays are juxtaposed. The themes of â€Å"Cosi Fan Tutte† deal with love, sex and fidelity are illustrated and commented upon in the modern context as seen through Henry's emotive language â€Å"Free love, women are not to be trusted† His opinion is generated through various experiences and general knowledge. The theme of love and fidelity causes controversy as the characters have different opinions which differ from each other. One of the main themes in Cosi, is the central idea of personal growth. All characters experience growth, however, Lewis' personal growth is the most significant as his simple dialogue states â€Å"no one can sing† exemplifying his negatively towards the patients. This is juxtaposed to his dialogue. â€Å"This comes first† when Lewis begins to see the play as his top prority. His transformation is outlined through Lucy's dialogue â€Å"Working with these people has changed you. showing Lucy's thoughts concering Lewis. Lewis' inner journey has provided him with a new understanding of not only himself but the world around him. Lewis is the protagonist of the play. To begin with, Lewis lacks confidence; the stage directions describe him as â€Å"not knowing what to say,† and talking â€Å"hesitantly† and â€Å"uncertainly. † Puttin g on the play for Lewis is motivated by his need for some quick cash. ‘What if someone forgets to take their medicine and-‘Is one of the many quotes that Lewis says that expresses his uncertainty. The play opens to a dark stage. This darkness is symbolic of many things. Firstly, it represents Lewis entering into a new world- very different from his own. The juxtaposition of light and dark represents his understanding of each world. The second idea represented is the loneliness of the patients within the institution. Like a child pulling the bed covers over his head, afraid of what he can't see and therefore could be lurking in the dark, society feared and misunderstood these people, keeping them locked away. Out of sight and therefore, seemingly out of mind. The final idea is that this opening symbolises Lewis entering into this world and shinning a light into their darkness. That is, coming into a world that he did not understand and therefore feared and offering the patients improvement in their lives and the potential for belonging, understanding and friendship. Doug is a pyromaniac – a firelighter – both in reality and symbolically. His actions threaten to get the show cancelled in its early stages when he sets fire to a toilet. Doug is the most sexually frank character asking questions like: â€Å"Was Lucy a virgin when you first had her? † and â€Å"How many did Lucy have before you? † He comes across as a crass character but his questions serve an important purpose. Like fires, his frank questions tend to spark actions or reactions. They are catalysts for thought. It’s Doug who reveals to Lucy that Julie has â€Å"gone for† Lewis, which leads to the final confrontation between Lucy and Lewis. Julie’s character is significant in a number of ways. Firstly, her views about love seem to be in direct opposition to Lucy’s (Lewis’ girlfriend). Julie has, â€Å"always thought that love was being foolish and stupid. It’s about being on the edge and I like being on the edge. † Whereas Lucy sees love as well down the list of priorities in life: â€Å"After bread, a shelter, equality, health, procreation, money comes maybe love. † However, interestingly, their characters are also similar. Julie says about men and fidelity: â€Å"I don’t like men’s double standards, I guess. Men want women to deceive them because it’ll prove their worst thoughts about women†¦Ã¢â‚¬ While Lucy says that men want women to â€Å"pretend they’re true and faithful† because â€Å"that’s how they want us to be, even if they’re not true and faithful themselves. † Julie, in a way, is an altered version of Lucy in the world of the mental institution. She is the character who completely brings Lewis into this new, strange world. Her kiss with him in the dark marks the full transition of Lewis. † I like the dark,† Julie says; because it’s in the dark that you can be who you really want to be.

Analysis Of Wendell Berry s The Pleasures Of Eating

A Reality Difficult to Stomach The food industry is devouring us. Big food corporations fixate on profits rather than the quality of their products, and humans have become victim to them. Humans are constantly looking for the most effortless way to obtain their next meal, whether it’d be from a fast food establishment or a frozen precooked dinner. Simultaneously, the big food corporations mass produce low-quality products and manipulate their prices to appeal to consumers. These eating habits yield negative effects to their health, paving a pathway to obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and other diseases. Humans no longer have an eye for the quality of the food they consume.
